A Hunter in the Winter Night Sky
This image of the night sky early in the morning on 12/4/2016 shows the constellation Orion the hunter setting over the burned trees in this part of Los Padres National Forest around Lockwood Valley, CA. These trees are what's left of the Day Fire the 11th largest in California history. Although the fire burned most of the trees here back in 2006 there are still some very dense pockets of juniper and pinyon pines left. In this picture if you look closely at the foreground you can also see some saplings starting to pop out among the bushes and scrubs.
While fires are a part of the natural cycle in Southern California human activity has been the cause of a lot of fires in the area, and was the cause of the Day Fire. If you happen to be out visiting the beautiful parts of SoCal please always mind the fire restrictions and practice common sense so we can protect these treasures from undue strain and damage :-)
